The second level of medical training is called physiopathology or ICM (Introduction to Clinical Medicine) which longs for two semesters. The main purpose of this course is to familiarize the students with physiological basics and mechanisms of diseases as well as the effective factors and analytical diagnosis of them.
Students in this course are required with passing the following lessons:
Symptomatology and physiopathology
Pathology and pharmacology
Symptomatology and physiopathology are two courses to be learned in the third year. Physiopathology lessons consist of subjects about digest, heart and blood circulation, internal glands and metabolism, kidney, blood, rheumatology, lung, nerves and pharmacology and pathology as well as Symptomatology.
It is clear that all educational systems seek educational goals. But what makes them different is the change inside the educational system. The change is valuable when the production and output is desired and based on objectives and primary standards. To find such values the assessment system in formed. ICM has also been designed for such a purpose. To make the project more efficient and clarified, assessment has been done in diagnosis and final testing. The purpose of need assessment is to have a true understanding of the students’ needs before they enter the ICM and the purpose of creative assessment is to observe and process the educational activities and processes in ICM and to change them if necessary. The final assessment was designed to specify the output since making decision about applying such changes in other faculties or returning to the same physiopathology system would be based on the output of this course. As you may know, students entering this course have, on one hand, passed the medical basic courses and on the other hand after passing the ICM and without having any specific attitude about clinical medicine will enter the hospital and start internship courses. Therefore, changes and preparations to make a student who has just learned the basics a clinical student will be possible in ICM and it is actually a connection between the two phases of study. ICM is focused on creating clinical attitude in the students before entering the hospitals. ICM has in fact no difference with previous physiopathology course. The only difference is in order of the issues which in ICM better helps the educational objectives based on the students’ needs.
Gaining the ability to communicate and the ability for physical examination as well as promoting the students’ knowledge in different cases before entering the clinical parts are among some of the needs to be fulfilled in the ICM. Having the ability of clinical explanation and also change of attitude to enter the clinical parts are also among the same needs. Such assessments have been done for major decision-makings (in Ministry, Dean of University, Dean of Faculty and the Deputy of Education) and slight decision-making (Professors, assistants and students).
Course Title: ICM
First Semester: Respiration ICM – digest ICM – Heart ICM – Nephrology ICM – Epilogue
Second Semester: Health apprenticeship ICM – Rheumatology ICM – Blood ICM – Glands ICM – Nerves – Medical Ethics
It should be noticed that the ICM epilogue includes some issues of pharmacology, pathology and scientific semiology which cannot be defined in other ICMs.
